Renting a car in Georgia: how booking, deposits and insurance work

Most rental cars in Georgia belong to local companies rather than international chains. They know the roads, they bring the car to the airport or your hotel, and their conditions differ from one company to the next: the deposit, the insurance, where they deliver and whether the car may leave the country.

We put those local companies side by side. This guide explains how a booking works on our site, what the deposit and the levels of insurance mean, and what to check before you drive away.

How booking works

  1. 1 Search by city and dates. You see the cars that are free for exactly those dates, each with its price for the whole rental.
  2. 2 Choose a car, the level of insurance and any extras, and where you want to collect and return it.
  3. 3 Send the request. Sending it is free: no card details are asked for.
  4. 4 The rental company confirms or declines within 6 hours. If it does neither, the request expires and we email you.
  5. 5 Once the booking is confirmed, you receive a voucher with everything you need at pickup.

What the voucher shows

The voucher names the rental company and its phone number, the car, the place, address and time of pickup and return, the price breakdown and the amount due at pickup. It also states the deposit, the mileage limit, the insurance and what it covers, the extras you chose and the cancellation policy.

The voucher is linked from the confirmation email. Keep it on your phone or print it. Your bookings are also listed in My bookings, which you open through a sign-in link we email to you.

Choosing a company

Every company on our site has been accepted by our team. After each rental, the traveller is invited to rate the car, and its average rating shows on the car card, so you can see how others found it.

The deposit

The deposit is a sum the company holds while you have the car and returns when the car comes back as you received it. How much it is depends on the car and on the level of insurance you choose: more cover usually means a lower deposit, and at the highest level some companies ask for none at all.

The booking page shows the deposit for every level of insurance before you send the request, and the voucher confirms it. In the search, the No deposit, Low deposit and Cash deposit possible filters narrow the list to the cars that suit you.

The levels of insurance

Every car comes with a level of insurance included in its price, and most companies offer higher levels for an extra charge. So that cars from different companies can be compared, we sort their cover into four levels: Minimum coverage, Basic coverage (CDW), Full Coverage (SuperCDW) and Full Coverage Plus.

A collision damage waiver, or CDW, limits what you pay if the car is damaged. SuperCDW lowers that amount further. What exactly each level covers, and the deposit that goes with it, is set by the company and shown on the booking page.

Delivery and return

You can collect the car at the company's office or have it brought to the airport, your hotel or another address, and return it the same way. Where delivery costs extra, the price shows it before you book, and some companies deliver free of charge for longer rentals.

Many companies also let you return the car in another city. Choose the return place on the booking page and the price includes it.

Cancelling

You can cancel free of charge until 48 hours before pickup, from the link in our emails or from My bookings. The cancellation policy on your voucher explains what applies after that.

Taking the car abroad

Some companies let you drive to a neighbouring country, most often Armenia or Turkey. In the search, the Cross-border travel filter shows the cars that may leave Georgia, and the booking page states whether crossing is free or what it costs.

At the border you need a power of attorney from the company that owns the car, notarised in Georgia and naming the country you are entering. Ask for it when you book, because it can take several days to prepare, and check the entry rules of the country you are driving to before you go.

Before you drive away

  • Walk around the car with the company's representative and photograph every scratch and dent, inside and out.
  • Note the fuel level and ask how the car should be returned.
  • Check that the spare tyre, the jack and the warning triangle are in the car.
  • Save the company's phone number from the voucher.
  • Ask what to do after an accident. Rental insurance usually needs a police report, so call 112 and wait for the police before you move the car.
